A Legacy Worth Living For
November has been a bit of a hard month for the nerd community with the passing of two iconic, childhood heroes. First with the passing of Kevin Conroy; the voice actor of Batman in numerous animated shows, games, and a live performance as Old Bruce in a TV series. Second and most recently Jason David Frank; most well known for his character "Tommy" in the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers TV show and the icon for the Power Rangers franchise. These two deaths were certainly not just a blow to my childhood (rushing to watch Batman: The Animated Series or learning karate from Tommy in his instructional video), but have been a blow to the nerd community with several tribute posts and videos on social media. However, it was not just the roles that they played that left an impact on their fans, but their actual heart to be an encouragement to their fan base. Even amidst their collogues, there is this sense of great loss for the world at large as these people were a source of enthusiasm and passion that was felt around them. What a legacy to leave behind.
This seems really down, but we see this drive for a legacy to live for throughout the Bible. Abraham was given a promise from God that Abraham's children would have an impact on the world based on how the world responded to them (Genesis 12:1-3). Moses passes a legacy to Joshua in how to be a leader for the people of Israel and even gives instructions for this in Joshua 1, by meditating on God's laws daily. David to this day is still revered as the best example of Israel's kings in his devout nature to God and establishing Israel's kingdom. Of course we come to the ultimate legacy of Jesus, yet, this one is different in that it is not a legacy of someone who is dead, but is still very much alive and active. In Matthew 23:31-46 Jesus illustrates how a life that is impacting others in love and service leaves a legacy that pleases Him. Remember in John 13:35, part of Jesus' legacy is to be shown in our love for each other. Our legacy is of love and bright hope for tomorrow. That is a legacy that I am wanting to share with those around me!
In an honest look over of where you are now, what is the legacy you are sharing with others? Is there something that needs to change in your legacy to fit more with Jesus' legacy?
