Armour of God, Nerd Style: Superman and the Breastplate of Righteousness

I think we can all understand why it is so important in battle to have a breastplate on. Simply put, it stops things from severely damaging your vital organs (heart, lungs, intestines, etc.). To go into battle without one is asking for that random arrow or lucky slash to take you out in one fell swoop.  Oooooo that's gonna hurt! In the Roman army, these breastplates often had smaller plates and several ties to make it a perfect fit for the soldier to have free range of motion while having maximum protection.

Superman is the most iconic piece for this armour.  What makes Sup's breastplate different than others is that it is from another planet (krypton) and was able to endure a lot of wear and tare in battle.  You would think this is the key to Superman's durability, but that's not the case; Superman is just naturally tough.  It's the iconic "S" that makes this stand out. One of my favourite lines in Superman: Man of Steel was when Lois Lane is asking what the S stands for. Superman says, its not an S, it stands for hope! Such a good nerdy moment. How does hope connect to righteousness?

Righteousness is an old, churchy word, but the definition is in the word itself: right.  To be right, Biblically, is to be in right standing with God or in good terms with Him. In scripture, it says we have all messed up and are not right with God, but we are made righteous through Jesus who paid the penalty for our sins (Romans 3:23&24). We are covered in our hearts by Jesus and makes it that we don't have wholes in our armour that might allow things to come in and take us out. Jesus' righteousness is the perfect cover for us.  Makes sense why righteousness would be our breastplate (Ephesians 6:14). That righteousness gives us hope in all situations we face, and the boldness to keep moving forward.

Breastplate check: how is it holding up? What has been weighing in your heart that you need to give to Jesus? Will you be willing to take on His protection and be confident in Him for you life?
