Armour of God, Nerd Style: The Flash and the Shoes of the Gospel of Peace
Imagine you get called to war and you have to react immediately. You have all the gear: Kevlar vest, combat weapon, belt with tools/supplies, helmet, and you are wearing flip-flops.... I hate to brake it to you, but you are not ready at that point to face anything that comes your way. With 30 seconds of intense fighting, those flip-flops would be flip-flopping off and you are stuck with just your barefeet. Not looking too good eh? Looking at the Romans foot wear, not only was it adjustable for each soldiers comfort, but they even had small metal spikes under them for gripping into the terrain! These warriors need to be prepared for any kind of climate that they would face and they knew our Old Navy flip-flops were not going to cut it.
When it comes to footwear, you gotta look at the heroes that are always on their feet and go everywhere with them. This is why the Scarlet Speedster (The Flash) is the best rep for the kind of footwear you would want. Think about it; this guy is able to run on water, run laps around the world, even out run time itself. You have to have the best foot wear that will not only take the intense heat or terrain, it needs to be comfortable enough to give you peace to just focus on running to save the world and not running to the nearest shoe store for a change up. Come to think of it, I can't ever remember the Flash talking about a problem with his shoes. Now that's peace.
Wouldn't that be amazing to have that kind of peace of mind like the Flash's shoes. Wouldn't it just be great to be able to have peace in general in life, that no matter what comes our way we can feel like we have firm footing through it all. Peace in the Bible is not actually about a calmness, it is actually about being whole or intact. Which makes sense when we are lacking peace there is this feeling like something is out of place or unsettled. Isiah 9:6 was looking forward to a person, a saviour that is the "...Prince of Peace." This was Jesus and the peace that He gives us is The Gospel or "Good News" that He is the one who saved us from our sins and the punishment of our sins, showing that in His death and resurrection there is a promise that if we follow Him we will join Him in eternity when He returns. Jesus shared these words to encourage the disciples which should do the same for us. "I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world." (John 16:33) Now that is the kind of peace we can sink our feet into (Ephesians 6:15)!
If the peace in your life was footwear, what kind of footwear would it be? Like flip-flops, comfy but not practical; high heels that look nice but are useless under pressure; combat boots that are not the prettiest but highly effective and always prepared? Put on Jesus' peace over your life in trusting in His Good News and walking with confidence/security in all terrains that you will go through.
