Becoming a Nerd 101: Intensely Passionate

Nerd is not a title to be feared anymore these days.  In fact to some, it is a badge of honour; even a level that is worth achieving.  I am personally proud to be called a nerd. That's right you can say it to my face and I won't cry; I might even give a heroic stance after you say it! But there are certain things that make a nerd, well... a nerd.  A major thing that sets them apart is there intense passion for their interest.  To a nerd, their interest is something that they are not simply enamoured by, it is the focus of their energy and free time.  Go to a comic convention and see how some of these nerds will wait in lines for hours dressed in costume for their fandom!  With such passion, these nerds at times can't help but go on rants on details to share what they are invested in to help you potentially get interested in it too.  If you have a nerd that does this, please take it as a compliment, as they are trying to invite you into their passion and a part of themselves (ask my wife). Nerds don't just see their passions as a hobby or just an interest; they see it as an expression of themselves.


Looking into the Bible (thick rimmed glasses at the ready), really God is into nerds and I would dare say that He calls us to be nerds about Him!  Not seeing it? Look at what Jesus says is one of the greatest commandments we are to follow in Matthew 22:37 "You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind." Or when a teacher of the law said that he would follow Jesus, this was Jesus' response: "Foxes have dens to live in, and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to even lay his head." (Luke 9:58). Or to another person who just needed to say good-bye to his family before following Jesus, we hear from Jesus "Anyone who puts a hand to the plow and then looks back is not fit for the Kingdom of God." (Luke 9:62) Jesus is not looking for a light commitment.  He is looking for the intense passion; that He is all you think about and is your driving force in what you do.  He is looking for you to be a nerd for Him and about Him.  But it's not just a passion you keep to yourself, you share it with others. Just like any nerd who wants to share their passion with others; to share in that spark!

How can you work on being nerd for Jesus and develop that intense passion? How are you sharing your intense passion of Jesus with others and bringing in new nerds to group?

Ich bin euer schild!

What's not to love about a character like Reinhardt (Overwatch tank hero)? He is a giant, older man who dives into the fray to protect his team in the middle of the fight.  This epic, German hero not only has a ginormous rocket hammer and massive armour, but also sports an immensely huge energy shield.  An energy shield that acts as both protection and a mobile fortress for the team to advance their ground.  However, this all pails in comparison to the enthusiastic battle cry from this mythically large brute, "Ich bin euer schild!" Translated from German to English (varified by our own German International Staff) "I am your shield!" As a player in the game I have seen this shield in action and it definitely offers a sense of peace as well as a drive to advance forward in competitive game play. What kind of Lantern are you?

What kind of lantern are you ? Kind of a weird question to ponder on isn't it. You might respond back with "Well what's the purpose of the lantern? What do you mean by using the word 'lantern'?" These are valid responses/questions to bring up, but I pose this question in processing what Jesus says in Matthew 5:14-16 , " You are the light of the world - like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house . In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father." Not going to lie, this makes me think of Kilowag (a Green Lantern member and mentor), teaching Hal Jordan on how to be a GL ( Green Lantern ) and how to use his ring.
